My name is Ben Lear and I am the director of "They Call Us Monsters." For those of you, who have not seen the film, it is a feature-documentary that follows Juan, Jarad and Antonio, three juveniles facing life in prison as they write a short film together in the weeks before their trials.
If you HAVE seen the film, you will remember Katherinne Gamez, Juan's younger sister. One of the great joys of making this film has been getting to know Kathy and watching her grow up over the years. As you can see in the film, she is remarkably strong and driven to make a difference in the issues she cares about.
For the last year, Kathy has been interning at InsideOUT Writers, a non-profit that provides writing classes in juvenile halls. In fact, the very same program we filmed for the documentary. A program that has helped her brother and thousands of other young men and women in his situation.
Now that Kathy is entering her senior year of high-school, we are hoping to raise money to turn her unpaid internship into a PAID internship, so that she can help out her family and save some for college.
With this $2,000 goal, we will be able to subsidize Kathy's internship part-time for the remainder of the school year. Of course, going above our goal will only help the cause further!
As I mentioned in the above video, finding ways to directly benefit the subjects of this documentary is very important to me and no one is more deserving of our support than Katherinne.
With that said, here is a short note from Kathy:
"InsideOut Writers has made a huge impact in my life.
Ever since my first day there, the staff was interested in knowing all my ideas and helping me to make them realities. They help me figure out myself and figure out how passionate I am to break the school to prison pipeline. They help me become a better advocate and learn how to speak up. Thank you so much for supporting my work with InsideOUT Writers!"
