DIAGNOSIS: LEUKEMIA
Dec 15 2018 Tristan was diagnosed with a type of Leukemia called AML. It was caused by some of the chemo drugs from his first battle with cancer (Sept 2017 - Dec 2017.) He’s been airlifted to St. Jude’s in Memphis where he will begin his treatment. The doctor’s say that it is “all hands on deck” and that what he went through before will be a “walk in the park” compared to what is now in store.
Tristan will have surgery to place a double lumen Hickman (type of port), receive a bone marrow biopsy and have a spinal tap. Tristan will be part of a clinical trial at St. Jude’s in Memphis. They prepared us that we will be there for a month, but it could be up to 6-9 months. The chances of getting this type of secondary Acute Myloid Leukemia is 1%. We were told the cure rate is 66%. The treatment will consist of months of intensive chemotherapy. Each cycle will be a month long where he will have to remain in the hospital the whole time. The chemotherapy will totally wipe out his white blood cells and will be followed by a bone marrow transplant. Hopefully his brothers will be a match for him, but Marcel and I will also be tested.
This GoFundMe Campaign is a way to help the Elsener family in their battle against Tristan's leukemia over the next 9-12 months. For the family's privacy, this GoFundMe campaign cannot be found by searching the site. Please feel free to share the link with friends and family who want to offer support.
It’s impossible to fathom that this is happening again. The generosity of friends and family last year was breathtaking. We all struggle to ask for help sometimes. Please pardon the pronouns. I copied as much as I could from Paula’s notes.
Thank you for your support.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP
* Jenni Grier in coordinating meals for Marcel and the boys in Charlotte. ** If you send a note through GoFundMe with your contact info, I'll forward it to Jenni.
* Gift cards for meals - needed for both Marcel and the boys in Charlotte as well as Tristan and Paula in Memphis
* Gift cards for Target or Kroger - accessible by the St. Jude’s shuttle. We will have an apartment on the campus of St. Jude’s and will need to set up “home” there
* Gas cards - Marcel and the boys will be driving the 8+ hours to visit
* Entertainment for Tristan - Tristan will be spending insane amounts of time in the hospital, especially for his transplant when he will be spending 30 days straight in the hospital
* You can go to your local RedCross and donate blood and/or platelets in Tristan’s name
BONE MARROW REGISTRY
Get on the National Bone Marrow registry at www.BeTheMatch.org. It’s a simple mouth swab sample that can be done through the mail.
Tristan will be having a bone marrow transplant and will need a matching donor. His brothers are the best candidates (full match), but it’s only a 25% chance they will match. After the brothers, the 2nd best match is a full match from someone unrelated (found through the registry). The third option is a half match from either Marcel or myself. Doctors request donors in the 18-44 age group over 95% of the time.
If you are between the ages of 45-60, you are welcome to register, but will be required to make a $100 payment to cover the cost to join the registry.
