Supporting Tom Gebhardt back to good health

Tom Gebhardt is one of the most compassionate people you will ever meet. If he has ever asked you how you were doing, you knew he truly cared about you because he would remember every little detail you told him. He is genuinely interested about what is happening in peoples' life. You may know him as the "boss man" at Coborn's from both Sartell and St. Cloud locations. You may have seen him at dance tournaments cheering on the Astronettes. You may have seen him at any high school gym or softball field across the state because he never missed a game (even those more than 2 hours away). If you would ever play against him in trivia, you would lose because this man knows everything and anything. This past November, Tom suffered from an ischemic stroke while deer hunting up north at his deer camp. He was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth and had to spend the week there, getting little sleep and taking test, after test, after test. He was diagnosed with aphasia and apraxia, meaning he now has a hard time understanding or expressing speech. The stroke occurred on the left side of his brain, so his right side experienced some nerve damage. Tom also experienced some kidney and other organ issues along with the stroke. After his stay in Duluth, he was transported to St. Cloud hospital where he spent over a month in the rehab unit, undergoing intense physical, speech, and occupational therapies. He was then transported to Chateau Waters in Sartell, where he would spend yet another month. He finally was able to return home on February 4th, three months later. Throughout the experience, there were many "downs," including multiple infections, worry, and illness. There was at least one good moment, however, where he was thankfully cleared to leave for the day to attend my wedding on December 21st. The best thing about my wedding was having Dad there, because we were not sure if he was going to be able to make it. We are hopeful that Dad will continue to make advances in his speech and movement with the help of continued therapy sessions, doctor visits and medicine. He is so loved by many. We need him to beat us all in trivia again, and get him deer hunting for the 2020 season. ~Melissa Gebhardt~
