We get to a point in our life where we strive for a sense of fulfilment, accomplished by helping others that need it most. Having the capability and knowledge to support a cancer patient physically and mentally is something that needs to be acted on.

Who Am I?

My name is Emilio Khatis, and I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Advanced B Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 22. My life was turned on its head not knowing what each week would look like and to say that my family and I were in complete shock and disbelief does not serve those words justice - it’s an absolute understatement.

Having spent 1 year in and out of hospital, I came to understand the power of the mind and not letting the negative stigma and the association with cancer get to you. I met amazing people and watched beautiful souls pass on. It allowed me to understand how precious life was and the importance of taking control of your situation no matter what the circumstances are.

My Personal Experience with Cancer

I found myself self-educating and reaching out to people in the hope for answers. Physical activity became my means of sanity as the hospital was in complete lockdown due to COVID regulations. I was slowly but consistently completing laps around the hospital ward every morning, eventually rallying up other surrounding patients. Some walked and others were wheeling around in a wheelchair while all had the vision of overcoming the diagnosis and dreaming of a perfect life, which was to be healthy.

Besides the circumstances, I was extremely grateful it was myself in this position, rather than anyone in my family. It’s safe to say that this experience has not only changed my outlook, but has opened my eyes to what matters most on this journey we call "life". My diagnosis has not only inspired me to make the most of every day, But to make a difference! Which is why I have decided to step up and make that difference.

During my journey, I noticed all the funding for cancer research, which is amazing, but I struggled to see/experience the movement for the front-line patients. The ones that are in and out of hospital doing chemotherapy and fighting for their life, the ones that truly need it most. As a cancer patient, we are extremely vulnerable and at times lost for direction. Which is why I am here today raising money and awareness for the front-line patient.

The “Fist Up” Campaign

I am campaigning behind a movement called "Fist Up". We strive to put together an organisation that is accessible for any cancer patient. The overarching mission of Fist Up is to provide resources and informational support to those with cancer. The aim is to nurture a positive and inspirational environment for cancer patients and their families. The purpose of "Fist Up " is to raise funds to firstly purchase Cancer Bells for every Chemotherapy Ward throughout Australia. Ringing the Cancer Bell signifies the end of chemotherapy for patients, bringing them hope and inspiration to their cancer journey, a moment which I cherish in my own story. Secondly, Cancer Care Packs will be provided through hospitals and general enquiry. These will contain fundamental items that can assist in making the lives of cancer patients easier while fighting their illness.

We have collated a number of resources and teamed up with various health professionals to provide an informational platform for cancer patients. We have also described in detail our goals and missions and will be documenting them along the way.

This is available on our website: www.fistup.org

As I have fought the battle that many more will unfortunately have to face, I know what is required to help them throughout and to provide hope and inspiration along the way. This organisation is being put together so you will know exactly how you are helping the patients directly, and what each cause is all about.

Thank you for reading through my experiences, as well as my vision, and I hope to show you what the power of unity for those in need can really do.

To anyone who has been affected by cancer remember, you are not alone, take one day at a time and keep those fists up in the fight against cancer. Peace and Love.
