Supporting the Tooma/Dunn Family
Donation protected
On Saturday 27th April, 2019, 7 minutes into the start of his third grade rugby match for the Helensvale Hogs, Damien Tooma went into a tackle badly damaging his knee. Rushed into emergency surgery the following day the prognosis was much worse than originally thought.
He has a complete rupture of the patella tendon, torn ACL & MCL and this was all done from the botttom not the top! Lots of anchor points, nuts, bolts etc. Damien, who is also the coach of his son’s U10 Rugby team is naturally devastated.
Damien is the sole breadwinner of the family and is a prison guard. This injury will see him unable to work for at least 9 months (or return to full duties for at least 6-12 months) and with his wife also unable to work due to an injury sustained in a car accident a few years ago this will put a significant financial strain on their family.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help keep their son at his current school allowing them to use any savings they have to pay for medical and living expenses.
This is a family that are constantly helping others, embracing friends as family and enriching the lives of those of us who know them. This is our way of supporting and giving back to them in their time of need.
Any donations will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you to all for the support!
*UPDATE*
Just a quick update on Damien. He had a surgeon review at the end of last week. There was good news and also some disheartening news. Damien’s scar is healing nicely and swelling is going down, mainly due to his dedication to maintaining his ice and the treatment he can be doing (which is rest).
The splint needs to be worn 24/7 until our next review in a month and then the surgeon will decide if it’s ready to come off and if some rehab/Physio can begin. Unfortunately during this appointment it was also very much reiterated that Damien’s return to full duties at work is loooong in the distance future... At this stage it is 3 months completely no duties with another 3 months to possible follow!
Whilst we are extremely grateful there is nothing more serious we are dealing with, we need to be honest & say these last few weeks have tested us more then we have ever been tested before - emotionally, physically & financially! We have been under stress since my car accident 4yrs ago now and with me not being able to work either, maintaining every day life is a challenge... Let alone our son, Millar’s therapy cost and also now Damien’s!
We are strong! We have amazing supportive families We have beautiful friends
If this feels right to you, please please donate so we can have one less thing to worry about. And if not could you please just share our story Thank you Much from the 3 of us.
