I am reaching out to our community today to support some of the most generous people I know: Britt and Susan Sensat. While they have always navigated life's challenges with grace and independence, a relentless series of medical crises has brought them to a point where they need our collective strength to stay afloat. I have personally been a recipient of Susan and Britt's kindness, and I know many of you have experienced their caring support in times of need as well. Now, we have a concrete way to return that love.
A Difficult Road to Recovery
Britt's health journey has been an uphill battle that began with a couple heart ablations in 2022 and 2023. In 2024, after one more ablation, he faced hip surgery and then more heart problems, resulting in a pacemaker near the end of the year. The challenges escalated significantly in 2026 when Britt required triple bypass heart surgery. Just as the family hoped for a recovery, he was taken back to the hospital this month, spending over two weeks in the ICU due to life-threatening breathing difficulties and other complications. Britt remains hospitalized in intensive care, and is currently unable to speak or swallow properly.
The Financial Burden
The emotional toll of these events is compounded by an immense financial burden. With the average ICU stay costing thousands per day, Britt's individual out-of-pocket maximum is only the beginning. Because Britt became self-employed a year ago, he does not have disability coverage, and he has been unable to work since his heart surgery. For now, this family of four is relying solely on Susan's income working at an elementary school.
