Let’s show The Schreiners some love and support as they navigate their baby boy’s diagnosis of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH).
CDH is a rare condition where the muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest does not fully close. This hole allows the abdominal organs to enter the chest cavity, displace the heart and lungs and prevent them from developing completely.
In November, about a month before baby’s estimated arrival, Ryanne will need to relocate to Winnipeg to be closer to the Health Sciences Centre with a team of medical professionals and necessary resources to provide lifesaving care to their baby. He will require a breathing tube to be placed immediately after birth and will remain on a ventilator until he is strong enough to do so on his own. It is estimated that this could take months.
In the first days after birth, baby Schreiner will require surgery to repair the hole and restore the abdominal organs to their proper positions. As their baby boy recovers from surgery, Ryanne will continue to stay close by in Winnipeg to support him and Justin will travel back and forth from Winnipeg to home for work.
The Schreiners have been staying optimistic despite the difficult journey that lays ahead. My aim is to decrease their financial stress so that they can better focus on recovery, healing and bonding together. I also hope, that on the hard days, Justin and Ryanne will be able to think about each of you and the well wishes and support you extend to them through this platform. They say “it takes a village to raise a child”. Will you join me to form their village?
