We are coming together as a community to support a family who has suffered an unimaginable tragedy.
In the early morning hours, a devastating apartment fire in Hempstead took the lives of Kenneth Roberts, 42, and his 12-year-old son, Mekhi Roberts. Firefighters responded shortly after 4 a.m., but despite their efforts, Kenneth tragically died at the scene and Mekhi later passed away at the hospital.
This heartbreaking loss has left their family grieving the sudden loss of two beloved family members while also facing the reality that the fire destroyed their home and everything they owned. Several residents were displaced by the fire, leaving families to pick up the pieces after losing their belongings and sense of security overnight.
Mekhi was described by loved ones as a very loving 12-year-old who enjoyed video games and brought joy to those around him. The pain of losing him and his father is something no family should ever have to endure.
We are asking for the community’s help during this incredibly difficult time. Donations will go toward funeral expenses, immediate living needs, clothing, and helping the surviving family members begin to rebuild their lives after losing so much.
