I've created this page to support my Sister and Brother-in-law as they are about to welcome their 3rd child, Oakland, into the world. Unfortunately, it was confirmed after multiple tests that Oakland has Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). To summarize this, at some point in the pregnancy the left chamber of his heart stopped growing and once he is born it will not be able to function on its own. In order for Oakland to survive, this he will need 3 open heart surgeries. The first, within a week of being born. The Second, when he is 3-4 months old and third, when he is 3-4 years old.

Tay and Kirsten will be relocating to Edmonton at the beginning of March to get ready for the arrival of their son. The Stollery Children's Hospital is the Cardiac centre for Alberta, meaning any child with heart conditions and/or that need heart surgery will initially be in Edmonton under the care of the Cardiac experts!

As you can imagine, this news will forever change their lives. In relocating for a couple of months (potentially longer), bringing along their two daughters under age 5, and not being able to work during this time due to the amount of time they’ll have to be at Oaklands side will be a significant shift in their lives.

Unforeseen living expenses, unexpected medical costs, childcare, parking at the hospital, gas back and forth to the hospital, are just a few of the unexpected costs they will experience. They are blessed to have an amazing family and Church behind them, but as you can imagine it’s still going to be a journey that not many people will understand.
