I am fundraising on behalf of dear friends Kyle and Kelly Henry. Their world was flipped upside down in early February when Kyle underwent spinal decompression surgery and tumour removal/biopsy. The results were a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma metastatic to bone. This is a fancy term for lung cancer that is travelling to other parts of Kyle's body. Tumours were found in his upper and lower spine, hip and upper thoracic area. According to Kyle's doctor, “this is a one in a million situation” as Kyle is much younger than the average lung cancer patient, has no smoking history and is otherwise incredibly healthy. Since the surgery and diagnosis, he has been at home recovering, with Kelly taking care of him full-time. Right now, Kyle walks with the help of a walker as the pain in his spine and hip are quite bad.

In terms of treatment, Kyle is travelling back to Victoria for radiation this week. He will be there Tuesday to Friday and then one session on the following Monday. This is supposed to be quite effective in getting him back on his feet and hopefully living in a pain-free way again.

He is not receiving Chemotherapy. His oncologist has him taking daily medication to slow the replication of cancer cells and to help keep it from spreading to other places in his body.

They were told last week that Kyle's cancer is incurable. If this medication is effective, he will have 3-5 years. They are still processing this shocking news and doing their best to focus on what they can control and put their positive energy into - his recovery from radiation.

What is important to Kyle and Kelly is using whatever time they have together to make memories and do the things they planned to do in later years. Once Kyle is better, Kyle and Kelly want to take a cross-Canada road trip in a travel van as it was in their retirement plan and a bucket list item for Kyle.

To give them another positive thing to focus on, funds raised will support travel and expenses of their dream cross-Canada trip.
