I'm Rewaa Khairy from Gaza. My life was full of hope and ambition before the war. I was a medical student, studying passionately to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor and helping others. I lived in a happy family; my father ran a small restaurant, which was our only source of income. Our life was simple but filled with peace and safety, and I saw a bright future ahead of me.
But suddenly, everything changed in a single moment.
I lost my father and brother right before my eyes due to the bombing that destroyed our home and everything we owned. My mother, who was always our source of strength, became seriously ill with a severe heart condition and now requires a complex surgery that cannot be performed here in Gaza. Her life is at risk, and I am now the sole caretaker for my entire family.
I have two younger sisters, Heba and Ne’ma, who are still children, and I am also responsible for my baby sister Fatima, who was born just one month before the war began. In addition, my brother Mohammad, who suffers from cerebral palsy, requires constant medical care. He cannot use the bathroom on his own and depends on diapers, which are both expensive and hard to find, not to mention the high cost of his medications.
My cousin Aboud, a young child, suffers from brittle bone disease and severe breathing problems. He needs a ventilator to survive. Aboud is the sole survivor of his family, which was completely wiped out in the bombings, and he now lives in deep shock and grief.
The war has destroyed everything—not just my loved ones but also our only source of income. The restaurant that my father ran, which gave us hope, was completely destroyed. Now, we live in extreme poverty. Some days, we go without food or water.
Every day, I wake up to face a harsh reality. I live in a place with no hope, and I am now the sole provider and caretaker for my family.
I once dreamed of becoming a doctor, but with all this suffering, that dream feels out of reach. How can I continue my medical studies when I can’t even afford to feed myself? How can I achieve this dream in a place with no safety or opportunities for the future?
My mother, my brother Mohammad, and my cousin Aboud are all at risk. We desperately need medical treatment outside of Gaza. We need help to escape this living nightmare. I don’t want my younger sisters to grow up in this destruction, and I don’t want Mohammad and Aboud to lose their lives due to neglect and lack of care.
Please, help us. We need $5,000 for each family member to leave Gaza. I want to save their lives and achieve my dream of becoming a doctor, but I cannot do it alone.
Please, don’t leave us drowning in this misery. We need you now more than ever.
