Supporting the arts at Spelman
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Armani Singh. I am a graduating Senior majoring in Dance Performance & Choreography, with a minor in psychology. Born and raised in Atlanta, I was constantly surrounded by black creatives so It was a guarantee I would easily be influenced by art. I wanted to extend my dance career by obtaining a degree in Dance at the #1 HBCU, Spelman College. Now that I am embarking on this exit journey, I will be directing my Senior Thesis Production titled “Growing from the dirt they left us in”. This thesis will ask us, How does the southern belle raised in a matriarchal community, glorify her identity while acknowledging the stigmas of intersectionality through the lens of social inequities and hypervisibility of the black body? My direct call of action is to deliver this answer through production of work that includes call and response interview clips joined by the women that raised along with, visual content that allows the audience to live in the moment and visualize the message. You will also see movement phrase work and theatrical work presented by eleven dancers, that will allow the audience to visualize this conversation of social inequities in the south and the hypervisibility of the black female body. This production will be a live showing on April 23, 2022 and April 24, 2022.
Your contribution will financially assist me with securing needs for:
•set design
•props
•lighting tools
•musician
•costume and design
•videography
I am asking all that support me to contribute to my art. “Being a visionary is to create and to create is to give the people something to feel.”
