I'm Leonie, one of Stephanie's close friends. She's like my sister. She's fighting a battle that most of us can only imagine. Cancer. Here's her story:
"My story started when I was 18. I received the Gardasil vaccine. Then I tested positive for HPV. I was first diagnosed with cervical cancer Stage 2 when I was 25. Fought a short fight & was in remission. It came back 5 months later Stage 3b. I fought long and hard with this one. Was diagnosed with Stage 1a breast cancer when I was 29. I fought and won. I had a pap to make sure I was still in remission when I was 31. A tumor was found. We scheduled a time to have it removed. My body decided it wanted it out on its own time. I had an emergency surgery to have it removed. This is when I had a PET scan. The pet scan showed 3 spots on my bones (pelvis, ankle, and right hip bone). We did a bone biopsy. Those spots came back with cervical cells. I was diagnosed with Stage 4B cervical cancer.
My insurance doesn’t want to pay for my chemo treatments because I have stage 4 cancer. Each treatment is $45,000. As of now, the hospital has agreed to not charge me that entire amount, instead 10% of it. So each treatment is $4,500. But who has that kind of money?
Currently the plan is 52 weeks of chemotherapy (5 different chemo drugs) 4 days a week with a break every 5 weeks (that’s 208 treatments of 5 drugs). If I can’t get 4 days of treatment in, then it doesn’t count towards the 52 weeks. Then chemo for 2 days every 3 weeks for the rest of my life.
Why am I asking for money? Because my insurance won’t cover all of my procedures. I can’t work because of my treatment regimen. I just need some help to pay the medical bills."
