My son, Shaun Zicree and his family, are facing yet yet another health crisis in their home. In 2009, they lost their 17 month old daughter Allison after a short and aggressive battle against an extremely rare form of blood cancer. Now, 10 years later, Shaun is in a fight for his life against end stage non-alcoholic liver disease. In December, Shaun celebrated 20 years clean and sober, and now he will need a transplant to survive, but this is no easy feat in the state of California. At this time, a move to another state is not possible for several reasons so they will stay put and keep fighting the fight every day.
After a second routine procedure last week, it was found that Shaun will require several treatments to keep the varices in his esophagus at bay. Varices are essentially varicose veins in the esophagus and are a byproduct of liver disease. If left untreated, the results could be fatal. This is just one single component of many in his treatment plan. His doctor immediately took him out of work for an undetermined amount of time because these procedures are going to be frequent and require special treatment afterwards. A transplant could be needed at any time because liver disease is unpredictable, at best.
Shaun has been the main income earner and health insurance provider of the household. This financial loss will have a great impact on their family. He will be using this time to prepare his body for transplant. I have started this campaign to hopefully ease some of the financial burden during this time of transition. No one should have to worry about keeping their home and feeding their children when they are fighting for their life with mounting medical expenses.
