One of my closest friends Sharon, has recently received the shocking and life changing diagnosis of a rare congenital heart condition, discovered during a routine medical. It was something she had no idea she was living with until very recently. This unexpected news has meant she now requires open heart surgery.

Sharon woke up one day believing she was healthy, planning for the future like the rest of us and within a short time was told she would need open heart surgery. There was no long road of preparation, no years to adjust, just sudden news that changed everything. As a student, and because of her visa and insurance status, Medicare and her health insurance were unable to cover the cost of this specialised, life saving surgery. Open heart surgery comes with extremely high costs, and the specialised care required for rare congenital heart conditions has left Sharon facing significant out of pocket expenses for surgery, hospital care, follow up treatment and recovery.
