Supporting Refugees in Kent

Supporting refugees in Kent

We know Kent is a welcoming place with a long established history of offering comfort and respite to those in the most need, wherever they’re from. We saw the spectacular response to those forced from Ukraine during the invasion by Russia. Now’s your chance to make a long lasting contribution to the lives of all refugees.

KentLive is launching a campaign to raise money to support refugees. We’ve teamed up with two local charities - the Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN), and Samphire.

  • KRAN works with young people aged between 16 and 24 who’ve arrived in Kent alone while seeking asylum. They provide them with a safe, positive space supporting them to succeed, via activities, services and learning.
  • Samphire runs a community engagement project working with people from overseas and local Kent communities to improve social cohesion, and better inclusion of refugees into Dover and surrounding areas of Kent through its Dover Together project and its Schools of Sanctuary Kent programme.

For the second time in a little over 12 months, the English Channel became the scene of unimaginable tragedy this week.

In desperate conditions in the dead of night, a small boat carrying dozens of people from France to the Kent coast capsized into the freezing water. Four people are now known to have died while the search continues in vain for more survivors.

This was just a tragic snapshot of the arduous journey taken every day by people fleeing war and persecution in search of a better life.

This also came just weeks after what is now known to have been a terrorist attack on a processing centre. It also comes against a backdrop of what are known to be terrible conditions at Napier Barracks and at the Manston asylum seeker holding centre in Thanet.

Whatever the political ramifications, it is easy to forget that these victims are people, somebody’s son, brother, father or relative. Once they arrive here they then face the arduous task of rebuilding their lives in a new country.

Donate now to show them that they are not alone.
