Hi, my name is Phia, I’m 9 years old and I’m raising money for the Aplastic Anaemia Trust.
Nearly two years ago I was diagnosed with non severe aplastic anaemia, which is a very rare blood condition. It means my bone marrow doesn’t make enough blood cells to keep my body working properly. Only about 1 in 500,000 children have this, so it’s something not many people have heard of.
Because of this, I feel very tired a lot, I bruise easily, and I get nosebleeds that can last a long time which puts me in bed for the rest of the day. I also get tiny red spots on my skin (called petechiae) and feel unwell more often than I used to, this means I don’t often manage full weeks at school anymore.
I’ve spent lots of time at Bristol Children’s Hospital. I’ve lost count of how many blood tests I’ve had! I’ve also had two bone marrow biopsies, hospital stays, IV antibiotics, and blood/platelet transfusions.
I’ve been through a lot but I know there are other children and adults who are facing even bigger challenges with aplastic anaemia. That’s why I want to help.
Why I’m Fundraising
I’m raising money for the Aplastic Anaemia Trust because they help people like me and my family by:
• Supporting patients and families
• Funding important research
• Raising awareness of this rare condition
• Encouraging bone marrow donations, which could save lives
At the moment, medicines and blood transfusions can help manage symptoms, but the only known cure is a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant and that sounds scary. The Trust works so hard to make things better for people living with this condition.
Thank you so much for reading my story and for any support you can give, whether that’s donating, sharing my page, or learning more about aplastic anaemia.
Love,
Phia
