Rikki's Road to Recovery

Hey everyone, my name is Celine and I am a colleague and friend of Rikki's. With permission, I am reaching out to our community for support. Thank you for taking the time to read this and any support is greatly appreciated :)

Earlier this year, Rikki was admitted to hospital due to abdominal pain. It was later found he had a carcinoid mass within his colon and needed urgent surgery. He underwent surgery and was discharged the following week however many medical appointments later, he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer with metastasis. He has been maintained on a monthly injection to limit the cancer growth however now requires Hepatectomy surgery in October to remove the multiple cancer spots and identify any further areas of concern.

Rikki is a devoted father, a loving partner, a supportive son, and the absolute best colleague. With our office chairs being 2 feet apart for the last 3.5 years, and having worked together for 6 years, I can firmly say he goes out of his way to find ways to bring joy into the office environment and everyone around him. He spends his evenings searching for hippo stuffies when the day has been hard, donates his croutons from his Caesar salad, always finds a way to make us laugh, and is always at the ready to lift spirits with a morning dance/sing along party. He is the type of guy who shows up for everyone in his life, and now it’s our time to show up for him.

Throughout Rikki’s medical journey he has remained optimistic and has continued to work, despite being unwell following the monthly injections. He has exhausted his sick time and now with the pending surgery, the surgeons are anticipating he will need 3-4 months off work, which may be extended depending on how the surgery goes. As our work benefits are limited and won’t cover basic family bills while he takes time off to recover, I am hoping we can show Rikki some love like he has done for so many others. This money will help him and his family cover bills while he recovers, ensuring he does not feel financially pressured to return to work before he is feeling physically ready to do so
