Support Orphaned Baby Wombats Journey Back to the Wild

Donation protected

24/7 365 days a year for up to 2 years. This is the time it takes to raise, rehabilitate and release just one orphaned wombat into the wild.

My dear friend and colleague, Judy, has dedicated the last 24 year to wildlife rehabilitation, the past 15 years rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing orphaned, displaced and mange bare nosed wombats. A qualified and register senior wildlife rehabilitator, her personal time is fleeting, if not non existent, exhaustion common place, heartbreak and tears are all to often, financially living week to week with hand in pocket daily for wildlife needs. Judy is on call 24/7 meaning the phone rings at 2am for a rescue, she is out on the country roads, torch and rescue kit in hand saving another little life from a pouch on the side of the road after its mother has been struck and killed. Hopefully back in time for the 5.30am start to feed the little ones in care. 2 - 4 hourly feeds for months on end is not uncommon.

These little wombats grow into 21kg digging machines before graduating. There are many stages before wombats head to a Soft Release Enclosure on a private property in a bush land setting preparing for a full release and a true wombat life. Stages are from pouch to cot, from cot to kindy pen, from kindy pen to small outside enclosure, from Jr small enclosure to Snr large enclosure. Being as adorably strong and destructive as they are means continual renovations or replacements/repairs of containment quarters.

The work wildlife rehabilitators do is voluntary, rarely acknowledged and only possible with donations. Some support is provided by the registered rescue but it is limited and does not go far. Even the specialised milk formula needed in their first year of care is at the cost to the carer.

Thankfully the amazing Animal Justice Party now hold a seat in parliament and managed to secure grants for registered rescues to treat mange Wombats out in the field ....but ONLY covers costs associated with out in the field. This does not cover the ongoing costs of formula, vet bills, enclosures, cots, pouches, teats, petrol, time, shelter and much much more.

It's been over 4 years since my arrival on Judy’s doorstep. I’ve seen many wildlife come through that same door..... Wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, echidnas, 100’s of flying fox, micro bats, brush tail possums, ring tail possums, koalas, Dunnits, sugar gliders, feather gliders, bearded dragons, a lace monitor, kookaburras and I’m sure I’ve forgotten some!

What would your generous donation go towards? …. an additional and much needed animal room, renovation to the outdoor enclosures, completion of the half build quarantine quarters for injured mange affected wombats. More specifically including materials, machinery hire and any tradies or labour hire required.

I’ve watch Judy work beyond exhaustion, grief and overwhelm to continue to save wildlife. I would love to give back a little. With your help I wish to lift some of the burden she carries
so she can focus on saving our Australian wildlife for generations to come.

Much respect for our volunteer wildlife carers and rescuers ♥️

What is a world without Wombats?!

All wombats that come into care are rehabilitated, and once survival is optimal, rereleased in a bushland setting via soft release program.

GILI - currently in care. Orphaned after her mother was struck and killed by a car. A pouch check saved her little life.

Harwin was found in his dead mother's pouch on the side of the road. He only survived and brought into care due to an thoughtful and kind member of the public that stopped and checked the pouch.
