On Sunday, 31st May, we will be taking part in the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin to raise money for the Oesophageal Cancer Fund (OCF).
Almost 20 years ago, our mother was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, shortly after losing her sister Maggie to the same illness. It was an incredibly difficult time for our family. Mammy went through intensive chemotherapy, radiation and major surgery, all under the care of Prof John Reynolds in St. James’s Hospital, who was simply amazing. His team were absolutely exceptional, especially the wonderful Jenny, whose kindness, support and reassurance meant so much to us.
Thankfully, after years of treatment, check-ups and close monitoring, the cancer never returned. In June 2019, Mammy proudly completed the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon with us — a day we will always treasure.
Thanks to the incredible work, research and support provided by OCF and its ambassador Prof Reynolds, our family got many more precious years with her. Sadly, Mammy was suddenly called to heaven in March 2021.
We are doing this year’s Mini Marathon in her memory and raising a little money for OCF, in the hope that another family can receive the same support and hope that we did.
