Nailah Griffin, local artist and community organizer, has been taking care of her dad Zaria, or Baba Z, through his diagnosis of stage 4 throat cancer for the past year and a half. After being misdiagnosed and denied coverage and government support, Nailah moved him in with her and her daughter in New Orleans to centralize his care. He started chemo in New Orleans and Baba Z has now now been in remission for three months.
Nailah is currently his sole caretaker. She's been working to take care of him, her teenage daughter, and herself as a single mother and an artist, and we are raising money for her to have a break to focus on his health and the wellbeing of their family.
On top of all medical costs associated with having stage 4 cancer, these funds will be used for homeopathic remedies, a juice diet, rent, bills, and living comfortably as a family. The goal is $25,000 for sustainable living as their family learns more about his health and diagnosis and finds stability for themselves.
Nailah and her dad have always been close. He’s played such a massive part in her journey as a human and now a parent herself. She knows him as a very independent person who’s always taken great care of himself, as an artist, an actor, and an entrepreneur. For him to be unable to fully care for himself has been eye opening as to how much care a person really needs to live.
We hope to get Baba Z back to a place where he can focus on manifesting his life dream: to revitalize the land their family owns in Mississippi and turn it into a BIPOC artist residency. Originally 300 acres, the Griffin family has lost almost all of it to taxes. He’s dedicated so much time and energy to reclaiming the lost land and working on it to have it be a safe place for family and generations to come.
Please help Nailah get to a place of ongoing support for her father. She means a lot to this community and her family's comfort is paramount.
