Hi my name is Tanya Kwochka, and I'm fundraising for my mom, Myrna McFadden, along side my siblings. Together as her children, we are reaching out to the community she has served so faithfully for 33 years.
The Heart of Our Community
If you’re from our community, there’s a good chance you already know our mom, Myrna. For 33 years, she was a fixture at the rink—it wasn’t just a career; it was where she built lifelong relationships and supported our town. She is well known for her famous rink burgers, but her impact reached far beyond the arena doors. Over the decades, she catered for countless organizations, events, and community groups throughout Weyburn. Whether it was a local fundraiser, a team meal, or a community celebration, our mom was the one making sure everyone was fed and felt welcome.
A Long Road to Recovery
It has now been three years since our mom experienced a traumatic fall shortly after her retirement. While the initial focus was on her immediate recovery, it eventually became clear that her hip had sustained significant damage that wasn't initially apparent.
In addition to the hip injury, she has been quietly managing the lingering effects of a concussion and whiplash sustained during the fall. These injuries continue to cause chronic headaches and have made it difficult for her to maintain the active lifestyle she’s always known. For a woman who spent three decades on her feet and always on the go, the current physical restrictions on her daily life have been a significant adjustment. She is incredibly eager to get back to the version of herself that can move freely and enjoy her retirement to the fullest.
Navigating Administrative Challenges
In October 2024, the situation became more urgent when her hip gave out, resulting in a second fall and a shattered upper arm. While her arm surgery was successful, the path toward a hip replacement became complicated by an unintentional administrative gap.
Her hip referral was unfortunately misfiled, and as a result, she effectively lost a full year of progress toward her recovery. We have now been informed that it could be another 6 to 9 months just to see a surgeon for a consultation, with no confirmed date for the actual surgery to follow. At 75, we want to ensure she doesn’t have to wait another year or more to regain her mobility.
Coming Together for Myrna
It is incredibly hard for our family—and especially for our mom—to ask for help. Throughout her 33 years of service in this community, Myrna was always the person with her door open, ready to give help to anyone who needed it without a second thought. Now, we are hoping to return that same spirit of generosity to her.
To help our mom regain her independence as soon as possible, our family has made the decision to seek private surgery in another province. This choice allows us to bypass further delays and get her the care she needs within a timeframe that allows her to actually enjoy her time with family and friends.
We are raising $40,000 to make this possible:
- $31,000: Covers the private surgical procedure and hospital facility fees.
- $9,000: Covers the necessary out-of-province travel, recovery lodging, specialized rehabilitation for her hip and neurological recovery.
If you’ve ever been impacted by our mom’s kindness, her generosity, or one of those famous burgers, we ask for your support. Whether it’s a donation or simply sharing her story, you are helping give back to a woman who has spent her life giving to all of us.
Thank you for helping us bring our mom back to the active, independent life she loves!
