My stepfather recently went in for what was supposed to be a routine heart surgery. We were told that, in normal circumstances, his recovery would be just a few days in the hospital before coming home. Unfortunately, things did not go as expected. Complications from the surgery led to a stroke, and now his recovery journey is far more difficult than anyone could have imagined.What was meant to be a short stay has turned into weeks in the hospital. He has recently been moved back into intensive care due to pneumonia, and once he stabilizes, doctors estimate he will need around three more weeks of recovery, followed by an additional three weeks of rehabilitation at another hospital two hours away from home.During all of this, my mother has been at his side every step of the way. Since they don’t live close to the hospital, she has been staying at a facility called the Heart House so she can be near him. While this has been a blessing, it’s also creating a significant financial burden. She will soon be facing even more costs as she prepares to commute daily for his rehabilitation.Anyone who knows my mother knows she is not the type to ask for help. She has been focusing all of her energy on supporting my stepfather’s healing, and the last thing she wants is to worry about finances during such a stressful time.
