My name is Verónica, and I’m reaching out during one of the most difficult periods my family has ever experienced.
A few weeks ago, my mom became critically ill after what initially seemed like a dental issue. What followed were severe complications after a dental surgery that was not properly treated afterward. This quickly escalated into a life-threatening brain infection, sepsis, and emergency brain surgery that ultimately saved her life. She spent days in intensive care and went through an extremely fragile period where we were not sure she would survive.
Thankfully, she did, but her recovery is long, complex, and still very much ongoing.
Due to limited hospital resources and the lack of available beds, my mom was discharged directly home instead of being transferred to a medical floor or rehabilitation unit. While she no longer requires IV medications or oxygen, she does need continuous professional care to support her recovery safely.
She currently needs help with:
• Getting in and out of bed
• Going to the bathroom
• Bathing and personal hygiene
• Mobility and fall prevention
• Cognitive support and reorientation
• Physical and cognitive rehabilitation
My brother has converted part of his home into a small hospital-style room, including renting a hospital bed and essential medical equipment. We’ve had to hire professional caregiving support to assist her around the clock, as well as therapists to help with her physical and cognitive recovery. She is weak, easily fatigued, and still recovering neurologically from both the infection and the brain surgery.
While we are incredibly grateful that she is alive, the financial burden of home care is significant and continues to grow. The costs include professional caregivers, physical and cognitive therapy, medical supplies, diapers, equipment rentals, and other daily necessities that are essential for her safety and recovery.
I’m creating this GoFundMe to help cover:
• Professional caregiving and nursing support
• Physical and cognitive rehabilitation therapy
• Medical equipment and supplies (hospital bed, diapers, mobility aids, etc.)
• Ongoing care needs during this critical recovery period
Any contribution, no matter the size, would make a meaningful difference. If you’re not able to donate, sharing this page would also help us tremendously.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, for your kindness, and for supporting my mom as she works toward recovery, one careful step at a time.
With gratitude,
Verónica
