During the last weekend of September, Mike and Jenny Staff were picking apples together at their home when Mike fell and broke 4 vertebrae in his neck and bruised his spinal cord. He was rushed to the ICU where he was stabilized and brought into surgery to repair as much of the damage as possible. After surgery Mike had limited motor function and feeling in his limbs, and is facing a long road of recovery.
Jen is the kindest person we have ever known and her deep care for people and animals here at Osceola Veterinary Service permeates everything she does. She has dedicated so much of herself to the care of others during her almost 20 years at OVS, we want to do everything we can to help her care for Mike during this time of need.
Any donations will go towards medical bills or making their home handicap accessible.
- Oct 14th - Mike is still having trouble gripping things and cannot place his feet appropriately yet. He will tentatively discharging him from Abbott on November 4th and transitioning him to a medical rehab facility in Golden Valley for rehab.
- Nov 4th - Mike has been moved to the treatment center in Golden Valley where he will be for at least the next three months, depending on his progress.
- Nov 27th - Mike is continuing to make progress but is now limited by the brace that he is required to wear for several more weeks. Hopefully he can continue once the brace is removed, but his doctors want to allow for as much healing as possible before it gets removed.
- Dec 22nd - Mike tentatively goes home in 6 weeks, however his insurance has dropped his therapy coverage as of 12/18/25 as they have deemed not enough progress is being made. The rehab center is doing their best effort to argue the necessity of therapy on Mike's behalf, but until more is heard back from the insurance company, Mike & Jen are forced to pay out of pocket as much as they are able in order to continue Mike's care.
- Dec 25th - Mike can put one foot in front of the other and move with a walker, but is shaky and fatigues quickly. His hands have made some improvement, but he still cannot grip small items like silverware unless there is a large rubber cylinder around it. The latest update on insurance is that they are denying coverage since Mike doesn't have a breathing/feeding tube, permanent urinary catheter, or IV medications. They are insisting that Mike can be transferred to a nursing home (which they wouldn't cover either) or go home (which is not wheelchair accessible).
- 1/5/25: Mike's brace is off and he can continue his progress in therapy! Having the brace removed opens more options for equipment and therapies. They also will be getting a stair lift installed in the next couple weeks in preparation for his eventual return home. Both Mike and Jen both want to express their deep gratitude for everyone who has made a donation, the support they have felt means more than what they can put into words.
