Supporting Michael & Esther
Donation protected
Hi. My name is Jacinda, and I am one of Michael's little sisters. We were all caught off guard when we found out Michael had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He eats well and takes good care of himself. But cancer does not care - it is not fair about anything or anyone, nor is it predictable.
We aren't sure of the stage at this point, but we will know in the coming days. One assessment determined that cancer has not spread beyond the esophagus, so we remain hopeful. Regardless of the stage results, Michael will soon begin radiation. The radiation is expected to last five or so weeks - hoping to reduce the swelling enough to undergo surgery to remove the portion of the impacted area. Doctors have warned them that there is a good chance the esophagus will have to be wholly severed during the surgery and will take several months to heal. During this time, his nutrition will be through a feeding tube. Once healed from the surgery, they will attempt to reconnect his esophagus so that he can eat food again. This is all the best-case scenario and what they are planning for now.
Esther has transitioned into the new food preparation plan - all smoothies and no solids. They are attending several doctor appointments each week, along with appointments for iron infusions to improve Michael's strength before radiation. These appointments require them to travel to Roseburg, Eugene/Springfield, and possibly Portland. Neither Michael nor Esther can work at this time with all of these obligations and are currently using their savings and any other government assistance possible.
We have set up this GoFundMe to help alleviate the financial stress Michael and Esther are going through right now. Esther will use these funds to cover their bills and pay for gas and other necessities. Unfortunately, they have a very long road ahead of them. If you choose to donate, it can be a one-time donation or a little over several months - whatever works best for you.
