Hi everyone, most of you know the story of our grandkids, please read below and I will also be putting up, updates. I'm asking for prayers, the Lord will provide. Thank you for your support that your love and support.
This fundraiser was created on behalf of Mason and the Coffman family. Prayers for our family are requested. Thank you!
On March the 15th, Mason Coffman, was with his sister Nola Coffman returning home from picking up dinner for the family, when another car ran him off the road. It was as a rainy night and their car started spinning after hydroplaning, and slid into a telephone pole. 911 was called. Although Nola was able to get out of the vehicle on her own, she was able to get in the backseat to help Mason because he had been knocked unconscious and not breathing. When Fire Rescue arrived, they had to cut the roof off and both back doors to extract him from the vehicle. His legs were pinned under the dashboard, but his torso was thrown backwards into the backseat. They had to bring him out the back door of the vehicle.
What came next was a world wind. Both Nola and Mason separate ambulances were rushed to Methodist hospital. Shortly after arriving at the emergency room, Mason was still NOT conscious. After running preliminary tests, a brain bleed was found, his left arm was broken in two places and his left ankle was broken. Mason`s head had impacted the side of the vehicle and has caused a traumatic brain injury. Their parents, Rick and Teainka Coffman raced to Methodist Hospital to be with BOTH of their children. Now the challenge of fixing the root of the problems remained.
It was determined that Nola has whiplash, a sprained ankle, bruises all over her legs and body, and her entire body is in much pain. She was released from hospital that night, but had to go to medcheck the next day due to the excruciating pain she was still experincing. Nola is also dealing with the fact of seeing her brother suffer so much, and the traumatic experience of her having to climb in the back seat of the mangled car to help him breathe. Prayers for our family.
After an MRI done, it was determined that Mason has a DAI (Diffuse Axonal Injury) of which there are four stages (1 being mild/4 being severe). Mason was diagnosed with stage 3, as well as his left arm is broken in two places, his left ankle and his left shoulder blade are broken. The wonderful team at Methodist Hospital is working with Mason to get him to wake up and stay a wake, He and the family have a very long recovery road in front of them. Teainka, the mother, and Nola his sister, have both lost their jobs due to this devastating ordeal. The hospital needs Teainka to be there every day to speak for him. to make Medical decisions and sign Medical paperwork.
Mason will have 4 to 8 weeks of intense therapy, and will be transferred to one of two facilities for critical brain injury patients for rehabilitation. The Indiana Acute rehabilitation facilities will either be the Rehabilitation Hospital in Indiana or Community Rehabilitation on Northside of Indianapolis. Once they send him home after the intense therapy, he will still be in rehabilitation on an outpatient basis to have more therapy. The doctors are saying it may take up to a year for Mason to recover. Our hope and prayers are that Mason will be able to come back to us at 100%. As for now, we are taking this one moment at a time.
We know that asking for help isn't easy, but Mason and the Coffman family need it at this most difficult time. Even with good insurance, the cost of Mason`s current care is overwhelming. His mother and sister both have lost their jobs due to this accident. If you are able to support in any capacity in their time of need, it would be greatly appreciated.
