Supporting Makenna Peed

For those of you who don’t know Makenna Peed, she was born December 2004 with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Makenna has gone through numerous surgeries and had so many complications because of her condition. This year was going to be exciting year for Makenna as she was supposed to start her Freshman year at Kewanee High school. Unfortunately, Makenna became very sick and has been unable to start her high school days. On July 24, 2019, Makenna underwent spinal surgery. The surgery was to remove scar tissue that was causing her scoliosis to worsen. Makenna started to have a decline in her condition. On August 20, 2019, Makenna was taken to the emergency room in Kewanee il and transferred to OSF in Peoria il due to her having sepsis from an abscess in her intestines. She underwent emergency surgery to remove the shunt in her intestines to see if it was infected. Early this morning, August 21st 2019, her parents found out the shunt was infected and Makenna now has meningitis. Another emergency surgery was performed on her brain to remove the shunt. Makenna now has an external shunt and is receiving numerous antibiotics to treat the meningitis and the abscess in her intestines. She is currently in ICU. At some point, if the antibiotics don’t work, the next step would be to have another surgery to remove the abscesses. All of this will have to be done before another shunt can be replaced in her brain to treat her hydrocephalus. Her external shunt is only temporary. Makenna will spend the next couple weeks at OSF and require 24 hour care. Unfortunately, her parents have been fighting with their insurance company to get tests approved so Makenna can get the care she deserves! Her parents, Luke and Nicole Peed, are both on FMLA so they can be with their daughter at this difficult time. Luke and Nicole spend thousands of dollars each year to get the care Makenna needs. With both parents on FMLA, they are unable to keep up with medical expenses.
