On March 25, our son Lowell’s life changed in an instant when his partner, Kristyn Wade, was struck by an alleged drunk driver while they were biking to work in Golden, CO. What should have been a celebratory day—Lowell's first day at a new job—was wrecked by a nightmare that he witnessed firsthand.
Kristyn is now beginning a long and difficult journey toward recovery from a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (and surgeries to fix them). After waking from a week-long coma, she has been increasingly responsive, answering questions first with hand and eye gestures and now with words. While there are day-to-day indications of improvement, recovery from a brain injury of this severity can take years.
At just 25, Lowell has been a constant anchor for Kristyn. He is balancing his new job with hours spent at her bedside while also tending to their home and caring for their cats.
The path ahead is lengthy and uncertain. We’ve set up this fund to allow our friends to help provide Lowell with the resources he needs to remain by Kristyn’s side during this critical time. Lowell is now managing their household expenses alone, and we want to ensure he has the breathing room he needs to stay focused on Kristyn's recovery and his own career while he processes the trauma of what he witnessed.
Donations will help cover:
Immediate Household Needs: Managing the rent and utilities of the apartment they share in Golden.
Essential Presence: Assisting with the costs of commuting and travel so Lowell can remain a supportive presence for Kristyn throughout her intensive rehabilitation.
Care & Stability: Providing a safety net for Lowell as he manages the weight of this event and forges ahead in his career, as well as covering incidental expenses and support items he may need to provide for Kristyn’s comfort and care.
Lowell is doing everything in his power to help Kristyn through this. While her family is focused on her medical and long-term care through a separate fund, we have established this fundraiser specifically to help Lowell maintain their home and stay on his feet while he supports Kristyn's recovery.
Thank you for standing with him.
About the Organizer:
I am Lowell’s father, David Michael Kalman, based in Petaluma, CA. I have set up this fund to manage the financial logistics for Lowell so he can remain focused on Kristyn’s recovery. All funds raised will be managed by me to cover Lowell’s household stability and the incidental costs of Kristyn’s ongoing support.
