Dear Tribe,
As many of you know, I run a small eye clinic in Birmingham, AL called NowVision Eye Care. Due to COVID-19, we are finding ourselves unable to conduct any business whatsoever for about a month and maybe more. We had to cancel a very large amount of appointments and were completely closed by Spring Break Week which is actually our largest revenue week for the entire year. I am prepared to stretch for a little while without incoming revenue, but I want to keep paying my employee, keep the company health benefits going, and continue to cover the overhead of the business. Some of my colleagues have lost jobs, and others have had to let go of their staffs. Other local businesses are closing completely. I'm not going out like that!! (And I'm not planning to get myself tangled up in a mountain of debt by taking out loans.) At the end of the day, I'll do what I have to do to survive, but I just don't believe that it's God's will when I have SO MANY loving friends, family, patients, and a community of people who personally care to see me keep going. Sooooo many have asked what can be done to help outside of prayer. There are 2 major ways to help, and please allow me to speak candidly. I wouldn't normally do this, but these are weird times, and I have to keep it REAL.
1) Whenever we can re-open, I need you to flood me with your friends, family, and neighbors who have ALABAMA MEDICAID insurance (Full Coverage) These patients do not pay anything out of pocket to come to me and their glasses are covered by their insurance. Their insurance is what reimburses me the most and the fastest. If I re-open and my schedule is filled with private insurance patients (for example VSP), it's basically a wrap. The reimbursements are simply not enough to help the company bounce back quickly. If you know someone with BCBS ALL KIDS, PLEASE SEND THEM AS WELL. They may owe a small copay, but their insurance will reimburse quickly. If they cannot afford the co-pay I can waive it.
2) I am attempting to raise $10,000 by getting at least 500 people to donate $20. I know it's a tough time for everyone, but I know if I close up shop, so many people would be disappointed and will have wished they could have done something help. It's a small ask for some, but it's a big ask for others. Only do it if the Lord places it on your heart to sow that seed. I believe it's good ground to sow. Consider giving more than $20 to move it along faster if you feel it more deeply. Share this directly with whomever you think may take an interest in helping a small black owned business, but my request is that we do not post this publicly. Tribe only.
Just know that I love you all. Thank you for allowing me to lean on you in these crazy times.
Sincerely,
Lori
