Supporting Katy Kovac through her cancer journey❤️

Hi, my name is Jackie Herrera. Kyle Kovac and I are raising funds for my cousin/his sister, Katy Kovac.

Kate spent her 35th birthday in the hospital this past May 2023. After several months of not feeling well-having horrible migraines and vision problems, Kate was diagnosed with brain cancer - specifically a grade 2 astrocytoma.

Over the last few months, Kate has had several appointments, procedures, surgeries, and hospital stays. Both of her parents, Kathy and Kenny, played a huge part in getting her to and from, and have been by her side through all of this. Kyle and Malcolm, her brother and nephew, were also able to come up from Oklahoma and spend some extra time with her in June.

During her hospital stay in May, she had surgery to remove what the surgeons were able to of her tumor. The doctors have decided to hold off on chemo and radiation therapy for now. The main goal right now is to continue to monitor by MRIs every 4 months, and to go on a specific medication once it is approved by the FDA and available for clinical use. Most likely early 2024. This is the first targeted therapy treatment specifically for low grade Gliomas, and is supposed to reduce disease progression and buy some time before she will need chemo and radiation therapy. This treatment plan was decided because the study showed that Vorasidenib can slow down disease progression and add about an extra 2 years. So, until Vorasidenib becomes available for clinical use, she is taking another medication that is specific to the gene mutation she has that causes tumor growth. The median survival rate for this is 8 years. However, every person is different and Kate is remaining optimistic. Her strength through all of this has been incredible and inspiring to say the least. She's a fighter!
