Supporting Jonah Cheng

On July 15th 2018, Jonah was born a happy and healthy baby.  At the time, there was no indication that there were any health concerns.  Matt and Addie were so excited to be parents to their new baby boy!

About two and half months ago, it became apparent that Jonah was experiencing developmental delays.  After seeing many specialists, they discovered abnormalities in Jonah's brain that affect his vision and motor function.   An MRI revealed thinning of the brain, white matter volume loss, and lack of myelination in the optic radiations. Doctors think he has cortical visual impairment and he is currently diagnosed as legally blind. Jonah also has hypotonia, which is low muscle tone, making it hard for him to move and develop as a normal child should.  He will be undergoing more testing to see if they can determine a cause for his brain abnormalities.

Recently, doctors have also considered that Jonah may have experienced a lack of oxygen during the birthing process which could have caused a brain injury.  The labour period was long and required medical intervention.

My name is Annie Easterbrook and I have known Addie (Jonah's mother) for almost 20 years.  She is one of my oldest and dearest friends.  Addie has always been very hardworking and has an ability to make friends and connect with people in all situations.  If you've had the pleasure of knowing her, you will know that she has an infectious laugh and a child-like spirit.  Her heart has always been so big and I know that these new developments in regards to Jonah have been weighing on her heavily.  At present, Addie will be taking more time off work as she supports Jonah through his development.  During this time, they will be a household with one earner instead of two. As the costs of these therapies and support can add up, we're hoping to alleviate some of the financial burden by raising funds.

As the brain is considered neuroplastic, especially in the growth period from birth to 3 years old, we hope that these various therapies can change the outcome of Jonah's neurological condition and give him a chance to develop as normally as possible (i.e. improved vision and motor function).

We are hoping to raise $50,000 to cover for Jonah's special needs and therapies over the next 3 years.  The costs include: Physiotherapy ($2,000+/y), Chiropractic ($1,000+/y), Occupational Therapy ($2,000+/y), Vision Therapy ($3,000+/y), Anat Banial Method ($15,000+/y), Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy ($10,000 for 40 dives), Stem Cell treatment in Colorado ($20,000), Movement Lesson in Arizona ($7,000 for 56 lessons), Masgutova Method ($1,500 for 10 sessions), The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential ($7,000)

In spite of all his difficulties, Jonah is such a happy and sweet boy.   Please donate to support this great family and share on all your social media accounts.
