Supporting Jeremy’s Recovery from Guillain Barre Syndrome

Donation protected

At the beginning of October, Jeremy began losing feeling in the fronts of his legs and the tips of his fingers. The numbness continued to spread over the following days, even after multiple visits to the hospital. Eventually, he lost feeling in his legs, feet, hands, arms, and abdomen.

On October 7, Jeremy admitted himself to the hospital, where a spinal tap confirmed that he was suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome. This is a rare and serious neurological disorder that causes the body’s immune system to attack the nerves. Without timely treatment, it can lead to full paralysis and even require a breathing tube.

Thankfully, Jeremy was transferred to KGH Hospital in Kelowna on October 8, where he received the treatment he needed to stop the progression. While the immediate crisis has passed, he now faces a long and difficult road to recovery. He is currently in a wheelchair and can only walk short distances with support. He will need to relearn how to walk, regain use of his hands, and rebuild his strength and coordination. Although timeline isnt fully guaranteed, doctors have estimated that recovery could take about six months or longer.

During this time, Jeremy needs help with nearly every aspect of daily life and ongoing care. As someone who has spent most of the last decade working as a frontline social worker, Jeremy has dedicated himself to helping others, offering compassion, guidance, and support to countless people in his community. He has given selflessly and changed many lives for the better.

Jeremy is also a devoted father to three young children. This diagnosis has created immense challenges, not only physically and emotionally but also financially. Unable to work, although being paid the remainder of his sick days, Jeremy will soon lose his primary source of income, despite working tirelessly, often up to 75 hours a week, to provide for his family.

For those of you who dont know me, my name is Megan, Jeremys partner, & have been staying in Kelowna to support him through this, helping with his daily needs and care, and we hope to make a return home soon, to continue care in Nelson.

Let this be our turn to show up for Jeremy in the same way he has always shown up for others. Any contribution, big or small, will help ease the financial strain and allow him to focus fully on healing and recovery. Let us come together as a community to surround him with the same care, kindness, and strength he has given so freely over the years.

Thank you so much for your support, love, and generosity.
