My name is Brian and I’m writing this for my younger brother, Jahir. This past Christmas morning, our family was deeply affected by a senseless and violent incident.
While asleep, Jahir was brutally assaulted in a home invasion and suffered multiple lacerations on his face, a broken nose, an eye socket fracture, and—most devastatingly—a fractured skull. After being rushed to the emergency department, Jahir underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve life-threatening pressure of his skull on his brain.
The Medical Journey: For nearly two weeks, Jahir remained unconscious, intubated, and unable to breathe on his own. During those days, neurologists couldn’t tell us if he would ever be the same. During this time, his airway coordination was very weak and he soon developed pneumonia.
To assist his recovery, doctors performed a tracheostomy—an invasive surgery involving an opening in the neck to place a tube into the windpipe. This allowed him to come off sedatives and, in the weeks since, Jahir has fought an upward battle to regain consciousness, motor function, and cognitive function. While his recovery has been remarkable so far, he now faces months of intensive physical and cognitive therapy before he can return to normalcy.
The Financial Path Forward: Jahir is a student at the University of West Florida and was living and working independently in Pensacola prior to this incident. As we focus on his rehabilitation, we are working to resolve the following financial obligations:
- Housing: Due to strict management policies, we have been unable to negotiate a lease cancellation. This leaves our family to cover his $900 monthly rent for the next six months ($5,400) as he recovers at home in Alabama.
- Education: Before this tragedy, Jahir was independently paying his way through school. He currently has an outstanding tuition balance of $2,190 that must be cleared.
Our Goal: Our goal is $7,500, which will cover Jahir's remaining tuition and the six months of rent required to fulfill his lease obligations. Our goal is to handle these practical matters for Jahir so he can focus entirely on his health.
We want to ensure that when Jahir is ready to return to his life, he can do so without the burden of these accumulated expenses. Any contribution you can make is deeply appreciated. If you are unable to donate, sharing this page is a meaningful way to help.
Thank you for your support and for keeping Jahir in your thoughts. We are so grateful for the prayers and support that have brought him this far.
