Lerix has had a tumultuous life. He was an eventer, retired years ago due to unsuccessful surgery for an injury. He was living out his life on a farm in Loudoun County, but when his caretaker died and the farm was being sold, he found himself homeless. A lovely lady in Long Island who has a soft spot for Lerix reached out to us and we were able to take him. After his arrival he began to use weight and develop neurologic signs. He tested positive for EPM, a protozoal parasdite that attacks the nervous system. A lot of horses carry the parasite with no issues, but evidently the stress of moving turned it loose in his system. Treatment is VERY expensive, but so far it's been successful.
It's not a one time deal. He will require the meds for life.
