Background
Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst economic crises in history.
- 22 million people are facing severe shortages of essentials, such as food, fuel and medicines.
- They are also experiencing 10+ hour power cuts/outages due to a lack of fuel.
- Inflation is skyrocketing: 16.8% as per the Central Bank of SL, but some analysts feel this is a conservative estimate.
- It is claimed to be the country's worst downturn since independence from the British in 1948.
About the Donation Drive
This donation drive is organized by the World Economic Forum's youth arm, the Global Shapers Community, specifically the Global Shapers Colombo Hub in Sri Lanka and the Global Shapers Vancouver hub in Canada, in collaboration with the Robin Hood Army Sri Lanka. We are looking to support over 600 underprivileged families living near the following areas:
- Nawala Railway Tracks
- Maligawatte
- Crow Island Mattakkuliya
- Rajagiriya Obeysekapura
- Buthgamuwa Road
We understand that this is only a temporary solution to support these communities. While the general population engages in protest, demanding systemic change and an end to nepotism and corruption, we hope to provide immediate relief for those in dire need of meals.
