In the early months of 2023, Elizabeth underwent genetic testing, revealing a mutation in the PALB2 gene associated with heightened risks of breast, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers. This, coupled with her significant family history of breast cancer, indicates a 53% chance of facing breast cancer in her lifetime. After thoughtful consultations with genetic counselors, breast surgeons, and a plastic surgeon, Elizabeth has made the courageous decision to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy along with DIEP Flap Reconstruction. While this choice has been daunting, she firmly believes it is the best course of action to minimize her risk and avoid the challenges faced by many of her dear friends and family.

Originally scheduled for early 2024, Elizabeth's plans took an unexpected turn in August 2023 when she was laid off from her job of nine years. Since then, she has been actively searching for full-time employment while taking on various part-time roles to make ends meet.

The prophylactic mastectomy, slated for scheduling between mid-March and May 2024, marks the initial step in Elizabeth's surgical journey. This double mastectomy will involve the placement of tissue expanders, setting the stage for subsequent reconstruction. The second phase, DIEP Flap Reconstruction, is a delicate process utilizing skin, fat, and blood vessels from the lower abdomen to rebuild the breast without compromising abdominal muscles. This reconstructive surgery is anticipated to take place towards the end of 2024.
