VICTIM OF HIT AND RUN

Donation protected
On November 18, 2023, our beloved mother Dolores Padilla faced a heart-wrenching hit-and-run incident, leaving her in critical condition at the ICU in Arrowhead Regional Hospital in Colton, CA. She suffered severe injuries — spinal and rib fractures, lung complications, and orthopedic damage. The driver ran over our mother , she was flung 15 feet , and the driver continued driving and fled the scene. Leaving her for dead. She was laying there for hours and it took a good samaritan to contact 911 to render aid to our mother. Upon the arrest, he shockingly claimed to have thought he “hit a rock” and managed to replace his windshield within two days of the accident. This incident brings to light the dangers faced by vulnerable individuals struggling with homelessness, and in our mother’s case, coupled with severe mental illness.

Our mom — diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and anxiety — has endured homelessness for most of this year. She has been resistant to accept our help, particularly regarding her mental health and living situation. But as her family, the pain of witnessing her struggle from a distance has always weighed heavily on our hearts. Our worst fears became a reality on that tragic day, and we hope this horrifying accident can shed some light on the dehumanization experienced by those facing homelessness and mental health issues.

Our mom endured several physical injuries—fractures in her spine, ribs, legs, and arms, a collapsed lung, and severe internal bleeding. In a time where compassion for the homeless is in short supply, her fight for survival is both heartbreaking and inspiring. We hope this incident can serve as a reflection of society's lack of empathy towards those facing mental health challenges and homelessness.

Despite our mom’s insistence on facing her challenges alone, our family has consistently stood ready to provide support and love whenever she reached out. Now, faced with the severity of her injuries and the increasingly overwhelming medical expenses, we find ourselves in desperate need of assistance. The costs for her treatment, numerous surgeries, rehabilitation, and potential long-term care, far exceed the limits of her insurance coverage and what our family can collectively provide. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will be able to recover any damages from the driver due to the driver’s history and lack of insurance.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude for any support you can offer, appreciating your kindness, acknowledging the humanity behind the struggles, and recognizing the meaningful difference you can make in my mother's life during this critical time. Thank you for being a beacon of compassion and solidarity.
