As Americans, we have a responsibility to support those who have given their health and well being in service of this country. Veterans who have been disabled as a result of their service must not only heal to whatever extent is possible, they must find ways to support themselves. The US currently has approximately 5.5 million disabled veterans with only half of those able to maintain employment.
We are a team of students who believe that no disabled veteran should struggle financially. Our team is made up of Jasmine, Jeffery, Chantz and India, students at the University of North Texas. We selected this organization to support in honor of our team member, India, who is a Navy veteran. We would like to make a difference in veterans' lives with the assistance of this Gofundme account.
Disabled American Veterans helps veterans apply for and receive benefits they are already entitled to such as pension and health benefits. They also play a vital role in making it possible for many veterans to use those benefits by providing education on what is available and free transportation to doctor appoints. To assist service member who are leaving the military and entering the work force, they sponsor career fairs, maintain a job board and offer personalized career planning. The DAV also assists homeless veterans with housing and mental health and rehab services and serves as the voice on Capitol Hill for veterans and their needs. Their top priorities are toxic exposure reform, increasing the benefits paid to a veteran’s widow and dependents, expanding access to mental health care, fighting fraud, and opposing cuts to benefits. They also influence policy by reviewing bills and providing expert testimony before the Veterans’ Affairs Committees
Leaving the service no matter which one is a big transition. Sometimes it can be scary and the unknown is stressful. Please join us with a small donation. Together we can make a big difference!
