Supporting Tod Cossairt

Like all who know and love the man, I feel so fortunate to be able to call Tod my friend. When I heard about his recent diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, the news put me on my heels. All I could think of to say (besides "oh, shit!") was, "Man, you are so loved! You and your family will receive so much support in so many ways!"

I’m grateful to Tod for entrusting me to begin the fundraising process and to those who are jumping in to organize other ways to support him, too. I know it can be hard to be on the receiving end of so much generosity. Again, I thank Tod for giving me the go-ahead to begin this effort.

My hope is that this GoFundMe will kick-off the raising of significant financial support to help cover the cost of upcoming treatment (initially, six months of chemotherapy), ease the financial burden that comes with this diagnosis, and give the Cossairt family the ability to choose the very best treatment, regardless of cost.

I know from the experience of my wife Laurie’s cancer survival that, among everything else, going through treatment is super costly. Taking time off of work, insurance deductibles (at least 10K with the new year around the corner), integrative treatment (that's not covered by insurance), and countless co-payments, can be financially devastating. This is the last thing we want the Cossairts to be worrying about as they navigate the next year of treatment and healing.

Compared to so many of his friends, colleagues, students, and families, I haven’t known Tod as long, but like you, I’ve experienced his kindness, generosity, and good humor. To me, Tod is a beloved mentor, an inspiring family man, dedicated educator, and just downright one of the most soulful humans I've ever had the pleasure to know. I love our talks and playing music with him!

Tod has always looked out for the people in his life and our beloved planet with compassion and care. He thoughtfully inspires and prepares so many students heading out into the world. Now it is time for us to help care for him! I know Tod will always be fighting for what he believes in, but for now, I just want him to focus on his personal fight.

Please join me in digging deep, my friends. Give what you can for now, and we'll surely gather around Tod and his family with tons of support throughout the year.

With love and gratitude,

Oliver Cornell
