Christopher’s background

From 1996 to 2021, Christopher worked in mental health as a nurse and occupational therapist in Lewisham then Tottenham in London. He helped and supported patients through his dedication and care. He received many accolades from his colleagues and patients during his tenure.

At the start of 2022, Christopher left the UK to start a new life in France with his wife, Nathalie.

This decision was based on the fact that Nathalie’s dad had been living on his own after losing his wife. He was already suffering from leukemia and was involved in a major fire accident for which he remained in intensive care for several months. Christopher and Nathalie moved in with her dad for a year to look after him before getting their own place which they set up as chambres d’hôtes (B&B). The plan was for Nathalie’s dad to join them but he died from pancreatic cancer 4 months after his diagnosis.

Nathalie

Nathalie was born near Paris, where she obtained a Baccalaureat in French Literature and Philosophy followed by a degree in English, Irish and American Literature and Civilisation. She moved to London in 1988 and did a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Foreign and Community Languages at Avery Hill.

She worked as a primary school teacher, including teaching in schools for children with moderate to severe learning and medical difficulties. She lived in Brixton then Streatham for 25 years and met Christopher in 2011.

Christopher’s health

Christopher first received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer (bowel cancer) in October 2023 for which he had a colectomy (removal of part of the colon) followed by an intense 6 months of chemotherapy.

In October 2025, secondary cancers were diagnosed in his lung and peritoneum (abdominal lining). In the first place, he underwent a lobectomy (removal of the top lobe of the right lung) and has just started another 12 rounds of very aggressive chemo before having surgery on the peritoneal nodule. However, since the lobectomy, another 2 suspect nodules have been detected on the top and bottom lobes of his left lung.

After each chemo treatment, the side effects take almost two weeks to subside and, by then, Christopher must go straight into the next round. During the chemo, the strong side effects, particularly the intense fatigue, the nausea and mucositis (inflammation of the lining of the mouth), make it extremely challenging for him to speak, drink and eat and he rapidly lost a lot of weight. He is now on a drip night and day between chemo sessions to re-hydrate him and provide him with vitamins and anti-nausea medicine.

The financial situation

Christopher had been working as an English assistant in nurseries and primary schools nearby but his contract finishes in April 2026. He was also working as a masseur which he will not be able to pursue because of the side effects caused by the chemo.

They live in a small village and, despite actively looking for months, Nathalie has been unable to find work. Having only worked in the UK and never having been salaried in France, she is not eligible for governmental financial help despite her French citizenship. She prefers not to leave Christopher on his own anyway as he requires constant care during his chemotherapy treatments.

Christopher and Nathalie had recently joined a company specialising in offering teenagers and adult linguistic stays to improve their English and French skills based on lessons in the morning and outings in the afternoon. After a mutual agreement with the company director, they have had to withdraw their application and, because of Christopher's ongoing chemotherapy, he will not be able to look for work for the foreseeable future.

Following advice from the French equivalent of Macmillan Cancer Support, Ligue contre le Cancer, they met with a social worker who explained that they are not eligible for financial help.

Next steps: How you can help Christopher and Nathalie

This unfortunate and unforeseeable situation has forced Christopher and Nathalie to make serious adjustments to their budget: monthly mortgage repayments and utility bills, food and travel, at least until June 2026, potentially even further. All their savings were invested in the rénovation of their home as a B&B, a project they deemed as a new start in life. However, this B&B activity only brings in an income from July to September and, with Christopher’s treatment and recovery process, this will be very difficult this coming summer (2026).

Because of the financial situation they are in, they are very reluctantly seeking support from their strong network of friends and they have decided to move back to the UK at the end of Christopher's treatment, hopefully next autumn.

Parcours de Christopher

De 1996 à 2021, Christopher a travaillé en tant qu'infirmier et ergothérapeute dans des hôpitaux psychiatriques de Londres, à Lewisham puis Tottenham. Il a apporté son soutien à ses patients grâce à son dévouement et son approche bienveillante. Durant sa carrière, il a reçu de nombreux témoignages de reconnaissance de la part de ses collègues et de ses patients.

Au début 2022, Christopher a quitté le Royaume-Uni pour s'installer en France avec son épouse, Nathalie. Cette décision a été motivée par le fait que le père de Nathalie vivait seul depuis le décès de sa femme. Déjà atteint de leucémie, il avait été victime d'un grave incendie et hospitalisé en soins intensifs pendant plusieurs mois. Christopher et Nathalie ont vécu chez lui pendant une année afin de s'occuper de lui avant de trouver un logement dans lequel ils ont aménagé des chambres d'hôtes. Le projet était que le père de Nathalie les rejoigne mais il est décédé d'un cancer du pancréas quatre mois après son diagnostique.

Nathalie

Nathalie est née près de Paris, où elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en lettres françaises et en philosophie, suivi d'une licence en littérature et civilisation anglaise, irlandaise et américaine. Elle s'est installée à Londres en 1988 où elle a obtenu un certificat d'études supérieures en éducation (spécialisation langues étrangères et communautaires) à Avery Hill.

Elle a travaillé comme institutrice, notamment dans des écoles spécialisées pour enfants présentant des handicaps scolaires et/ou médicaux modérés et sévères. Elle a vécu à Brixton puis Streatham, banlieue sud-ouest de Londres, pendant 25 ans et a rencontré Christopher en 2011.

Santé de Christopher

Christopher a reçu un premier diagnostic de cancer colorectal (cancer de l'intestin) en octobre 2023. Il a subi une colectomie (ablation d'une partie du côlon) suivie de six mois de chimiothérapie intensive.

Entre-temps, il a appris deux autres terribles nouvelles: la perte de l'une de ses sœurs, emportée par un cancer, puis le décès de sa mère, quelques mois plus tard.

En octobre 2025, des cancers secondaires ont été diagnostiqués au poumon et au péritoine (membrane tapissant l'abdomen). Il a d'abord subi une lobectomie (ablation du lobe supérieur du poumon droit) et vient de commencer douze nouvelles séances de chimiothérapie très agressive avant une intervention chirurgicale pour un nodule péritonéal prévue en été 2026. Cependant, depuis la lobectomie, deux autres nodules suspects sont apparus sur les lobes supérieur et inférieur de son poumon gauche.

Après chaque séance de chimiothérapie, les effets secondaires mettent pratiquement deux semaines à s'atténuer puis Christopher doit enchaîner directement avec la séance suivante. Durant la chimio, les effets secondaires très importants, notamment la fatigue intense, les nausées et la stomatite (inflammation de la muqueuse buccale), font qu'il éprouve beaucoup de difficulté à parler, boire et manger et il a rapidement perdu beaucoup de poids. Il est désormais sous perfusion jour et nuit entre les séances de chimiothérapie afin de le réhydrater et de lui administrer des vitamines et des médicaments anti-nausées.

Situation financière

Christopher travaillait comme assistant d'anglais dans des écoles maternelles et primaires des environs, mais son contrat se termine en avril 2026. Il travaillait également comme masseur, activité qu'il ne pourra plus exercer en raison des effets secondaires provoqués par la chimiothérapie.

Ils vivent dans un petit village et, malgré des recherches actives depuis plusieurs mois, Nathalie n'a pas réussi à trouver du travail. Ayant uniquement travaillé au Royaume-Uni et n'ayant jamais été salariée en France elle n'est pas éligible aux aides sociales, malgré sa nationalité française. De plus, elle préfère ne pas s'absenter dans la journée car Christopher a besoin de soins constants durant sa chimiothérapie.

Christopher et Nathalie avaient récemment rejoint une entreprise spécialisée dans l'accueil d'adolescents et d'adultes pour des séjours linguistiques en anglais et en français constitués de cours le matin et sorties l'après-midi. Après un accord mutuel avec la compagnie, ils ont dû retirer leur candidature.

En raison de la chimiothérapie que suit Christopher, il ne pourra pas chercher de travail dans un avenir proche.

Après avoir été conseillés par la Ligue contre le Cancer, ils ont rencontré un assistant social qui leur a expliqué qu'ils n'étaient pas éligibles pour une aide financière.

Prochaines étapes : Comment vous pouvez aider Christopher et Nathalie

Cette situation malheureuse et imprévue les ont obligé à faire des ajustements quant à la gestion de leur budget: remboursement de l'emprunt immobilier, factures, nourriture et déplacements, au moins jusqu'en juin 2026, voire plus longtemps. Ils ont investi toutes leurs économies dans la rénovation de leur maison en chambre d'hôtes en France, un projet qu'ils considéraient comme un nouveau départ. Cependant, cette activité ne leur rapporte des revenus que de juillet à septembre et, compte tenu du traitement puis de la convalescence à venir de Christopher, l'été prochain (2026) s'annonce très difficile à gérer.

Face à leurs difficultés financières, ils sollicitent, à contrecœur, l'aide de leurs amis et ont décidé de rentrer au Royaume-Uni à la fin du traitement de Christopher, si possible l'automne prochain.
