Supporting Carl's Comeback
Hi my name is Malcolm Moses-Hampton. I am writing this with my family for my dad Carl Hampton. We created this GoFundMe to support my dad's recovery from a large stroke.
My dad has had a rough 5 years now. He was diagnosed with heart failure in 2015. He underwent two heart surgeries to repair a congenital valve issue. After recovering from the last surgery, an open heart procedure and defibrillator placement, he suffered a devastating stroke in early 2020 as a result of complications from his heart issues.
Up until his stroke he was doing what he'd done for 35 years. He worked as a psychologist in DC and MD. He focused on supporting and uplifting the mental health of the black community. His work focused specifically onhelping black men reenter society following encarceration. I can't remember a time when he wasn't giving something. Those who've spent even a moment with him have undoubtedly been gifted some of his wisdom in a quip or in a story. Those who worked with him or were mentored by him were given endless encouragement and space for reflection. Those who were close to him were given a quiet but unconditional love. I know my dad to have given anything he had to give even in times when he needed help himself. After each heart surgery, he went back to work, helping others work through their tough times. Unfortunately this time around he won't be able to return to the work that helped so many.
My dad's stroke left him with limited strength in his right arm and more impactfully an communication disorder called aphasia. Now the thing which probably identifies him most, his freewheeling and energetic speaking is severely diminished and needs rebuilding.
We hope that you can now help us give him the support and care he needs as he continues to recover. Please consider giving and sharing this message to those who know and care about him.
PS - One of dad's favorite activities is looking through old pictures and reminiscing. If you have any pictures of him or with him in them please add to your post and or send to [email redacted]. Thanks again.
