Supporting Ann in Memory of Rob
“Rob died earlier this evening. We were all with him. I feel lost, and uncertain as to what I do with myself now, but I’m so lucky to have had 24 years of being loved so very well.”
This is what my dear friend Ann Nichols wrote to tell people on December 16, the night she lost her beloved husband Rob Nichols to complications of cancer treatment. She told me that the Sparrow Hospital neuro ICU team did all they could to help her and Rob. The treatment had given him so much extra time, but in the end, his body could not withstand it.
Although she is surrounded in love (and thank you all for that), the next few months are going to be really hard for Ann. There will be a mountain of paperwork and the insurance probably won’t cover all of the expenses, because it never does. There will be the costs related to the funeral. And then there is the very significant issue of the loss of Rob’s income to their household. While some costs go down when you are widowed, some costs (mortgage, property taxes) stay just as high.
I have known Ann for something like 25 years as my neighbor, my coworker, and my friend. She is one of the most beautiful people on the planet. I almost feel unworthy to even count her as a friend, she is such a remarkable human being in her soul. She loves abundantly and grieves accordingly. This loss is gigantic in her life; Rob was her soulmate.
This fundraiser is meant to help Ann bridge the unpredictable expenses of the next few months as she deals with this significant loss and the transition to the next stage of her life. I am asking you to give generously in support of Ann and in memory of Rob, who was truly a wonderful, kindhearted person who loved Ann so much and so well. We can never replace Rob, but we can help Ann in this way.
If you have ever known Ann, you know she lives modestly and asks little. I have often had to push her to ask her for the help she deserves, reminding her that is how karma works – by letting others help. I am personally now asking you to give as much as you can to help Ann experience as little financial stress as possible as she faces a very different life now. Every penny you donate goes to Ann directly. Thank you for helping her.
