Our family is facing an unimaginable challenge as our loving 15 year old son/grandson/nephew/brother/uncle/friend/teammate Alex Hunter, undergoes treatment for aplastic anemia, a rare and serious bone marrow failure disorder. This condition prevents his bone marrow from producing the blood cells his body needs to survive, making everyday life suddenly fragile and uncertain.
What began as an ankle injury during a hockey game quickly turned into something far more serious. Over the following weeks, Alex’s health declined rapidly. He experienced severe pain, extreme fatigue, appetite loss, night sweats, and signs of jaundice. After multiple hospital visits and extensive testing, Alex was admitted to the hospital in Timmins and then transferred by medivac to CHEO in Ottawa, where he is now receiving specialized care.
Since being admitted, Alex has required multiple blood transfusions due to his bone marrow’s inability to produce red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells. Doctors have confirmed that his liver is inflamed, adding complexity to his treatment. Due to the seriousness of his condition, Alex will need to remain hospitalized at CHEO for the next few months.
This condition is rare, and doctors have shared that they only see cases like Alex’s once or twice a year. His medical team is beginning immunosuppressive therapy as the first course of treatment. If this approach is not successful, Alex may need to undergo a bone marrow transplant. We are currently awaiting genetic testing results from a specialized laboratory in the Netherlands, which will help guide the safest and most effective treatment plan.
As parents, our only focus is being by Alex’s side while he fights this battle. Unfortunately, the length of his hospitalization brings significant financial strain. Expenses include travel to and from Ottawa, accommodations, meals, missed work, and other unforeseen costs that come with long-term hospital care far from home.
We have created this GoFundMe to help ease the financial burden during this incredibly difficult time so we can focus on what matters most, Alex’s health and recovery. Any contribution, no matter the size, or simply sharing this page, means more than words can express.
We ask for your prayers, positive thoughts, and continued support for Alex and our family. Thank you for standing with us during this journey.
With love & heartfelt gratitude,
-Alex’s entire family & friends!
