Thank you all for the outpouring of love and support for my nephew, Ace, my sister, Haley and her husband, KT Carter. From the messages our family has received and interest in Ace's journey, we created this space to share medical updates and for anyone who feels led to support Ace, Haley and KT as they navigate the recent difficult news, tough conversations and decisions in the days to come.
If you know Ace, you know he’s a fun-loving three-year-old who loves music, numbers, bubbles, cars, Slim Jims, and basketball—and he’s one of the biggest fans in the stands, always cheering on his dad and the Mars Hill University men’s basketball team.
Ace was diagnosed before birth with HLHS (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome), and he’s been fighting since day one. In the three years of Ace’s life, he has powered through three heart surgeries, survived a cardiac arrest, and spent many days on life support—through it all, he keeps pushing forward and showing us what courage looks like in the smallest body, with a happiness and joy that radiates to everyone around him.
Yesterday, Haley and KT received news that Ace’s heart is failing, and that his pulmonary function needed to be improved to give him the best shot at a successful transplant.
The current plan is to keep Ace in the hospital on IV milrinone, start a new pulmonary medication, and repeat another heart cath in 2-3 weeks to determine if his pulmonary function has improved. If it has, the expectation is that Ace would likely remain inpatient to move forward with a heart transplant.
The doctor said Ace looks remarkably good for what his tests show, and he believes this plan gives Ace the best long-term chance.
All of this being said – Haley and KT expect to remain inpatient with Ace for an indefinite period of time.
Haley will be out of work to care for him, and KT—who recently accepted his first head coaching position with the Mars Hill University men’s basketball team—will be traveling back and forth during conference play to support both his team and his family.
Ace’s recent health update has been difficult for his parents and our family to process, but we’re so grateful for every prayer, message, and act of kindness—and we believe God is continuing to show up throughout this journey.
GoFundMe requires a fundraising goal to be set, but we created this page for the sole intent to make it easy for anyone who feels moved to support Ace, Haley, and KT. No financial expectations or goals—just gratitude.
