Support For Sloan

On the evening of August 27th 2018 Rebecca came to find what any woman would dread… a lump in her breast. Of course we were in denial because, with her only being 28 years old, this couldn’t be happening. She immediately made an appointment with her doctor which quickly turned into an ultrasound, then mammogram, followed by a biopsy procedure and by September 17th she got the news. Positive for breast cancer. Specifically, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma with 5 masses in her left breast.

Cancer is all too familiar to her as breast cancer, among others, run in her family on both sides. Her surgeon recommended genetic testing which also came back with results nobody wanted to hear. On Rebecca’s 29th birthday (October 3rd 2018) we found out she is BRCA1 mutation positive. Rebecca is currently categorized as grade 2 breast cancer, strongly positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors. Pathology will be done after surgery to test 2 "suspicious" masses in her lymph nodes,  as well as the tissue from the double mastectomy. Chemotherapy and radiation have not been ruled out yet. Results from biopsies after surgery will determine if her lymph nodes have been affected and exactly how aggressive her cancer is. At this point, the oncologist believes the cancer is in Stage 2. Carrying the BRCA1 gene mutation also puts her into a higher risk (40% likely) for ovarian cancer. It has been suggested that in her late 30’s she should have another surgery to reduce that risk.

What this means for her is that she will begin hormone therapy required to freeze eggs to hopefully in the future be able to carry a child. She will also be having a double mastectomy the week after Thanksgiving after all fertility preservation procedures have been completed.

Rebecca is the mother to two dogs and is currently in college full time to become a Registered Nurse. She works full time and frequently donates to the Red Cross for blood drives and also participates in awareness events including breast cancer walks, Alzheimer’s and suicide awareness.

Any financial contributions will impact her greatly with trying to pay for costs associated with prescriptions, copay's, hospital bills, fertility treatment, egg preservation, loss time at work, school bills, etc.

From her family to her friends to her co-workers, Rebecca is the glue that keeps all of us together. She is the office "mom", though the youngest team member in our office. She is the heart and soul of all good things and a true ray of sunshine each and every morning.

Since learning of her procedure, she has been the one who is keeping others positive and upbeat and not allowing sadness from anyone.

Our Rebecca is extremely important to us and at the conclusion of her procedure we just want her to focus on getting better. Not on bills, not on school, not on quickly returning to work so she can regain full income. We just want her to get better. It is because of this why we have created this page. We are reaching out to the world to see if you can help us along in our mission to assist our dear granddaughter, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, girlfriend, puppy-mom, and friend.

Every dollar helps Support "our" Sloan.

From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You.
