So Many Unknowns.

That’s what Nick and Anne have been dealing with since Nick suffered a stroke on March 4th, just days after his 36th birthday.

We are Nick and Anne’s sisters (Cassie and Jen) and friends (Jeannie and Lindsay), creating this campaign to ask for help as they try to navigate the road forward with a lot of “tricky situations” in Anne’s words. They have two young children, and the financial strain of their current situation is mounting.

When Nick got to the hospital on March 4th, tests confirmed he had suffered a stroke. But not just one stroke. The imaging showed that Nick likely had more than 10 mini-strokes over years of his life, in addition to this new, big stroke.

This new stroke caused left-sided body weakness, including a facial droop and decreased arm and hand mobility, making simple tasks like getting dressed and combing his hair difficult. However, the physical impairments paled to the exhaustion, the mental struggle, and the questions. What makes a 36-year-old, seemingly healthy male have a stroke? And why were the brain scans showing all those mini-strokes? What in the world was happening?

After working through brain imaging, testing, and lots of discussions, Nick’s team of doctors now think that Nick has a rare brain condition called Moyamoya disease. This condition causes a narrowing of the blood vessels in the brain. In Nick’s case, the disease restricts blood flow from going where it should go, which has likely caused all the strokes. While having a potential diagnosis is helpful, it has raised more questions than answers. There will be many doctor appointments, more testing, hard discussions about treatment options, and lots of therapy in the coming weeks.

Nick was finally able to return home to his family on March 9th. Their children, Ollie (age 4) and Gracie (age 18 months) are working hard to adjust to all the new changes, but the situation is difficult and ever-changing. As Nick begins his hard work of recovery with occupational and physical therapy and further treatment, Anne is deep in the hard work of supporting Nick while figuring out how to keep their lives moving forward.

Anne is fielding never-ending phone calls, researching, caring for two little ones at home, managing their house, and maintaining her job as a teacher. Their responsibilities keep piling up, and so do the financial concerns, as Anne is quickly running out of paid time off.

Nick and Anne have both mentioned that their friends and family are asking how they can help, and this is where we can come in! Money raised will go toward Nick’s growing medical bills/treatment, travel to specialists, childcare, Anne’s unpaid time off from work, and other unforeseen costs.

No amount is too small- even $5 will help! If everyone gives just a little, they will be able to focus on Nick’s treatment and healing without being overwhelmed by financial concerns. Anne and Nick will be receiving the money from this fundraiser directly from this website into their personal checking account.

We know you want to express your support; however, please leave a comment in the support section below rather than reaching out directly. Nick and Anne are trying to keep their daily lives as streamlined as possible, focusing on family at this point in his recovery.

We thank you from the bottom of all of our hearts! Please show Nick, Anne, Ollie, and Gracie your support by considering a donation and spreading the word!! We will keep you updated on Nick’s journey in the coming weeks.

With love and gratitude,
Jeannie, Lindsay, Jen, and Cassie
