Baby Leah is seven weeks old. I met her mom, Danielle, while working together when I first moved to Charlottesville. She is one of the sweetest woman I have ever met, and Danielle and her husband, Zac's, story has really touched my heart.
Leah was already a miracle baby born four weeks early and continues to amaze everyone with her perseverance. At four weeks old, she was diagnosed with Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome. The Allen family has been in and out of University of Virginia Hospital since early October. Baby Leah has had to have blood transfusions, MRIs, daily blood work, a couple rounds of chemo therapy through a picc line in her arm, as well as many other tests. They have been in touch with specialists in Cincinnati and are going to start her on medicine that has a high success rate of shrinking vascular lymphatic tumors. Thank goodness, no more chemo. This process can take anywhere from two months to two years. Since then, Leah's diagnosis has been correctly identified as Kasabach-Merritt with Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma.
On November 7th, Baby Leah was able to go home to be with her family, especially her 14 month old adorable sister Breanna. Danielle and Zac are so happy to have all four of them under one roof again. They have been juggling between being with Leah at the hospital and spending time with Breanna at home. The way both parents have held it together and stayed positive for their daughters truly inspires me.
As they stay strong through this road ahead, I hope we can help by taking some of the financial pressure off of them.
