Why we need your help
In 2015, without warning or negotiation, OSU College of Engineering relinquished support of our team, then called Oregon State University Solar Vehicle Team (OSUSVT). Since then, we have had logistical challenges funding and insuring our vehicle. Due to our separation from OSU, many technology companies that we relied on for financial support have also pulled their funding.
Phoenix Solar Racing is an independent nonprofit organization run by approximately 20 OSU students that design, build and race solar powered vehicles. PSR provides Oregon State University engineering and business students with real world, hands-on engineering experience that other school opportunities do not provide.
Part of our mission as a solar race team is to help spread the word about the capability of clean energy technology. Through this engineering project, we demonstrate the capability of electric cars and solar cell technology! We get engineering students involved with solar technology and electrical vehicle drivetrains rather than petroleum engineering and combustion engines.
Inspectors scrutineering The Phoenix during the 2014 American Solar Challenge.
Phoenix Solar Racing is undergoing a year long project to rebuild and and upgrade our beloved solar vehicle, The Phoenix. Our project is about 75% complete, but with our current funding we are not able to complete a working, road-worthy Phoenix. Our goal of $6000 will fund the purchase of electric motors, electronic parts, paint, adhesives, and tools to build the vehicle, and allow us to drive by the end of September!
Our main goal is to complete The Phoenix as we have worked to design it. Once it is completed, we plan to take a long trip down the West coast, stopping at businesses, schools, and other places to spread our knowledge and passion for engineering. On top of this challenge, we also plan to take the trip without a full trailer, putting pressure on us to ensure that the solar vehicle can make the whole trip on only the power of the sun.
In the future, we plan on entering national and international solar car races, like the American Solar Challenge to compete against other solar vehicle teams from around the world and make a name for OSU and Phoenix Solar Racing!
If you are someone who believes in Electric Vehicles and Solar Energy.
If you are a former member of OSUSVT or PSR who has benefited from the team experience.
If you believe in engineering education outside the university lecture hall.
Please support our team!
Sincerely,
Gabriel Maria, Engineering Lead.
John Ren, Business Lead.
And the Members of Phoenix Solar Racing.
