Support Zylah's Master's Journey in Japan

Help Zylah Pursue Her Master's in Japan!
Hello! My name is Zylah Markham. I've been given an incredible opportunity: I have been nominated for a full-tuition scholarship for a Master's in United Nation Policy Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan.

I have received faculty approval to begin my thesis surrounding gender education policy from a Black Feminist lens. Being a Black American woman has been integral in my previous undergraduate degree from Emory University, where I first took a course on Global Black Feminist Politics. Not only will I be using the United States as a case study but also Japan, and Taiwan. Currently I'm an English Teacher in Taiwan, and my experiences have deepened my understanding of how gender, race, and education intersect across culture.

Why Japan?
I studied abroad for 3 semesters in Japan under a scholarship that covered everything. This afforded me the opportunity to sincerely and freely study Japanese language, politics, and culture. I fell in love with the country and want to return to deepen my work and collaborate with international scholars on global education reform.

What the Funds Will Cover
I'm seeking support for living costs on the assumption that my tuition is covered. I will be responsible for...
Housing
Food
Health Insurance
Relocation Costs

Being based in Taiwan with minimal savings, I will need around 10,000 usd to cover basic expenses in the first year.

How You Can Support
Any donation amount from $1 to $500 will help me:
1. Secure a visa (proof of funds of 1,000,000 yen at least is required)
2. Find stable housing (key money and initial move in costs are expensive in Japan)
3. Focus on my research without risking food or housing insecurity
If you aren't able to donate then please share the link on other digital platforms!

What This Means To Me
Grad school opens the doors for other women around the diaspora! We have valid contributions from our lived experiences, communities, and leadership. These factors help facilitate equity amongst global policy, and the field of education.

With honest gratitude,
Zylah Markham
